If you look at this image from Bill Snyder site, we can see that the comet tail hides some of the stars behind her. And not only behind the 2 tails but also on the top and bottom of the 2 tails (you have to see the best quality picture to see that). Compare to the second picture from Gordon Mandell (you have to flip symmetrically up and down the picture), it seems that the obscuration is real...
The picture acquisition elements are not the same in the two pictures but you have to compare the density of stars near the comet.
